Don’t get me wrong, my pantry always has a jar or two of marinara sauce in stock. And I will never be ashamed about reaching for a jar. But sometimes you’re craving a little more and want to put a little love into your meal. Not to mention that the flavor of homemade anything always beats out store bought. BUT that doesn’t mean you’re looking to spend your afternoon peeling tomatoes and babysitting the stove. Enter my Simple Marinara Sauce.
All you need are 5 ingredients. And you likely already have them in your pantry!
Simple Marinara Sauce
- 1 can whole-peeled tomatoes. San Marzano are my favorite!
- 1 large yellow onion
- A couple cloves of garlic
- Dried oregano
- Olive oil
Everything goes into a medium pot and simmers away for about 45 minutes. All you have to do to finish is pull out the big chunks of onion. Then smash the garlic cloves and tomatoes against the side of the pot with your spoon. If you prefer a smooth, chunk-less sauce, you can blend using your immersion blender. But, I usually just mash by hand and give it all a good stir.
Why should you make this Simple Marinara?
Reaching for a jar of marinara is super easy, but I promise it’s worth trying to make it yourself.
- Check your labels! A lot of store-bought marinara sauces have added sugar or other added ingredients. By making it yourself, you’re in control.
- It’s easy! No chopping, just a few pantry staples, and a mostly independent simmer. Just give it a stir occasionally!
- Versatile! Obviously, it’s amazing on pasta. But don’t forget about using it for pizza sauce!
- Make it ahead! This marinara keeps well in the fridge for 4-5 days, or pop it in the freezer for months!
- Authentic Italian flavor. The 45 minute simmer may seem like a long time when you have a jar sitting in your pantry, but the simmer is what gives the sauce its rich, Italian, tomato flavor.
While the sauce is simmering, you can prepare the other pieces of your meal. Maybe boil a pot of water for some pasta. Spiralize some vegetables. Roll out your pizza dough and prepare your toppings.

- 1 28oz can whole peeled tomatoes (I like San Marzano)
- 1 medium sweet, Vidalia onion (peeled and cut in half)
- 3 cloves garlic (peeled and left whole)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano
- pinch red pepper flakes (optional, for spice)
- salt (to taste)
- In a medium pot, combine the tomatoes (with juices), onion halves, garlic cloves, olive oil, oregano, and pepper flakes (if using).
- Bring the sauce to a simmer over medium-high heat. Lower heat to keep the sauce at a slow simmer for 45 minutes. Stir occasionally, and use a wooden or silicone spoon to crush the tomatoes against the side of the pot.
- Remove from heat. Remove onion halves and discard. Crush the garlic cloves against the side of the pot with your spoon. Also crush any small onion pieces that remain. If you want a smooth sauce, you can use a blender or immersion blender at this time.
- Taste the sauce and add salt as needed and desired. Serve as desired and enjoy!
This sauce keeps covered in the refrigerator for 4 days. Or it can be frozen for up to 6 months.
