    ⭐️Why I Love It

    • Healthy for your pup - I love to make my own dog treats so I know exactly what my dog is eating. Also try making these homemade pumpkin dog treats that use canned pumpkin puree instead of the mashed sweet potato.
    • Perfect for a Celebration - Great to celebrate your dog's birthday or gotcha day! Another favorite doggie recipe for celebrations is this recipe for Dog Carrot Cake.
    • 4 Simple Ingredients - You only need whole wheat flour, a sweet potato, eggs, and applesauce! And, unlike many dog treat recipes, they don't use peanut butter so these are nut free dog treats!

    🥘Ingredients

Flour, sweet potato, applesauce, and eggs.
    • Whole Wheat Flour - While you can use regular white flour, I prefer to use whole wheat flour for my dog treats as it adds more nutrients.
    • Unsweetened Applesauce - Using applesauce lets us use way less oil and keeps the recipe healthier. Make sure to use plain, unsweetened applesauce.
    • Eggs - These act as a binder and help give the cookies the right texture.
    • Sweet Potato - You'll microwave the sweet potato to cook it then mash up the flesh.

See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

    🔪Step by Step Instructions

Sweet potato pierced with a fork.

Photo 1 - Poke the sweet potato with a fork a few times then cook in the microwave so you can mash the flesh.

Mashed sweet potato, flour, eggs, and applesauce in a mixing bowl.

Photo 2 - Add 1 cup of the mashed sweet potato to a mixing bowl and mix in the eggs and applesauce then mix in the flour.

Sweet potato dog treat dough in a glass mixing bowl.

Photo 3 - Mix well to combine to make the treat dough. It should have consistency similar to regular cookie dough - soft but not overly sticky.

Photo 4 - On a floured surface, roll out the treat dough to about ¼ inch thickness.

Photo 5 - Bake in the preheated oven for 25-35 minutes (dependent on thickness and 'crisp' preference).

Photo 2 - The treats are done when they are to your desired crispiness! Some dogs prefer super crunchy treats while others may like slightly softer ones. They will crisp up more as they cool.

    💭Recipe Tips

    • Treat Thickness - You can roll them thinner if your dog prefers thin, crispy cookies. Just adjust the bake time accordingly. The treats should be hard and crunchy once cooled.
    • Dog Likes Chewy not Crispy Cookies? - My dog likes treats that are crispier and easier to crunch on, but if your dog needs softer treats then you can just bake them for less time.
    • Don't have cookie cutters? - If you don't have small cookie cutters to use, you can also use a sharp knife (or even pizza cutter) to cut the dough into small squares.

    🍽Leftovers and Storage

Homemade dog treats can be kept at room temperature for 5-7 days or in the fridge for 1-2 weeks. But they can be frozen for up to 3 months. I like to leave a few out and then freeze the rest.

    👩‍🍳Recipe FAQs

Are Sweet Potato Dog Treats safe for dogs?

Sweet potato treats are safe for dogs. Sweet potatoes have fiber that helps dog's digestive system and also has vitamins like B6, C, and A. Like any dog treats though, it's best to feed them to your dog in moderation.

Can I use regular flour instead of whole wheat in a dog recipe?

Yes, you can substitute regular all-purpose flour for the whole wheat. I prefer to use whole wheat flour as it is more nutritious for your pup.

    • Cook Time: 25 minutes
    • Total Time: 40 minutes
    • Yield: 32 Treats
    • Category: Snack, Dessert
    • Method: Baking
    • Cuisine: American

    Ingredients

    • 1 small-medium sweet potato, to get 1 cup mashed
    • 2.5 cups whole wheat flour
    • 2 eggs
    • ¼ cup plain unsweetened applesauce

    Instructions

    1. Prep - Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
    2. Cook Sweet Potato in Microwave - Prick the sweet potato several times with a fork. Cook in the microwave on high for about 6 minutes, until fork tender. Cook time will vary based on size of potato. Let sit until cool enough to handle.
    3. Mash Sweet Potato - Cut potato in half and scoop flesh into a bowl (discard skin) and mash potato with a fork then measure out 1 cup.
    4. Mix Dough - Add 1 cup of the mashed sweet potato to a mixing bowl and mix in the eggs and applesauce then mix in the flour.
    5. Roll out Treats - Turn dough out onto a well-floured surface and roll dough to about ¼-inch thick (see notes). Cut out into shapes using a cookie cutter or cut dough into squares with a sharp knife or pizza cutter.
    6. Bake Treats - Place cut treats on parchment lined baking sheets (I used two sheets) and bake for 25-35 minutes until the treats are to your desired crispiness. I've found that my dog prefers treats to be crunchy and hard vs chewy. So I will bake these treats longer than you would 'human cookies'. When done, they should look well past set, but not burnt. But bake them according to your dog's preference!
    7. Cool and Serve - Allow the treats to fully cool  and they will crisp up more as they cool. Serve or store!

    Notes

Homemade dog treats can be kept at room temperature for 5-7 days or in the fridge for 1-2 weeks. But they can be frozen for up to 3 months. I like to leave a few out and then freeze the rest.

My dog loved these! I like that they don't use peanut butter unlike so many treats.
