This Mug Cake recipe is perfect when that chocolate craving hits but you're short on time and ingredients. It only takes 3 ingredients to make a rich and decadent dessert. In under 5 minutes you can be enjoying a fun, sweet treat.

    Why I Love It:

    • 3 Ingredients
    • Microwave Mug Cake
    • Rich Chocolate Flavor

    3 Ingredients You'll Need:

You read that right - only THREE simple ingredients to make a decadent chocolate mug cake. Here's what you need:

    • All-Purpose Flour
    • Nutella - or other chocolate hazelnut spread. Also try making this Microwave Nutella Fudge or Nutella Puff Pastry Christmas Tree.
    • Egg
    Nutella cake batter

How To Make a Nutella Mug Cake

Just a few seconds to mix up and only a minute in the microwave gives you a super moist chocolate dessert.

    1. Mix up Cake Batter - Start by beating the egg in a microwave-safe mug. Then stir in the Nutella until mostly smooth and finally mix in the flour.
    2. Microwave - Microwave for 1-1.5 minutes until the cake is puffed up and dry to the touch. When in doubt, it's better to undercook it by a few seconds than to overcook it.
    3. Enjoy! I love topping it with a dollop of extra Nutella and serving with fresh berries.

    Frequently Asked Questions:

I don't have a microwave... can I bake it in the oven?

Yes, you can make it in the oven but it will take longer. Use an oven-safe ramekin and bake in a preheated 350 degrees F oven for about 15 minutes (dependent on size of dish). Use a toothpick to check for doneness - the cake is done when it comes out clean or with just a few moist crumbs.

Can I make more than one?

This recipe is written for one mug, but you can easily double it to make two! It’s best to microwave them separately, though. Microwaving two mugs at once will impact the cook time.

What size of mug should I use?

Any standard size (8 ounces or larger) coffee mug works! The most important piece is to use a mug that is microwave safe! The cake will rise as it bakes to about double its size.

Do I need to grease the mug?

Because you eat the the treat right out of the mug, you do not need to grease the mug. I just soak the mug in some warm soapy water for a few minutes before cleaning to remove any cooked on bits.

    Recipe Tips

    • Microwaves Vary - The strength of your microwave may be different than mine, so keep an eye on the mug cake. It's better to undercook it and pop it back in for a few more seconds than to overcook it.
    • Mix Egg and Nutella First - It's much easier to get a smooth batter if you mix the egg with the Nutella first before adding the flour.

    Variations

    • Extra Nutella - For a super decadent dessert, you can add a little Nutella on top of the finished mug cake as a 'frosting'.
    • Chocolate Chips - Want pockets of melty chocolate? Try stirring in chocolate chips or mini chocolate chips to the batter.

    Serving Ideas

The Nutella mug cake is ready to eat right out of the mug, but if you want to jazz it up try some of these pairings:

    • Fresh Berries - Top the cake with raspberries or sliced strawberries
    • Scoop of Vanilla Ice-Cream - Top the warm Nutella microwave cake with a scoop of your favorite ice-cream
    • Whipped Cream - Either regular aerosol whipped cream or the whipped topping in a tub are great on top.

Check out these other microwave mug recipes:

    • Apple Crisp - top fresh, chopped apples with an easy crumble topping.
    • Coffee Cake - swirl cinnamon sugar into the batter to make a moist and tender coffee cake.
    • Molten Chocolate Cake - gooey, chocolatey and perfect with a scoop of ice-cream on top.
    • Sugar Cookie - get that classic sugar cookie flavor in a cooke-cake form.
    • Chocolate Chip Cookie - melty chocolate chips in a mug cookie-cake.
    • Hot Cocoa Mug Cake - use hot cocoa mix to make this chocolate cake!
