Why I love it
- Easy Ingredients - You can find the ingredients at almost any grocery store!
- Super Quick - You only need about 10 minutes of active prep time
- 3 Ingredients - You only need store-bought puff pastry, Nutella, and an egg wash for that golden finish!
Step by Step Instructions
It is so easy to make this festive Nutella puff pastry dessert!
- Thaw Puff Pastry - You'll need to thaw the puff pastry before you can work with it. I prefer to thaw in the fridge according to the package directions. If you thaw at room temperature, make sure you only let it sit until it is just thawed - you don't want the dough to be warm or room temperature.
- Cut - Roll out the thawed puff pastry sheets into two large rectangles (about 10-11x13 inches) and cut both into the shape of a Christmas tree. I like to use a star cookie cutter to cut out two stars from the scraps.
- Layer and Twist - Spread the Nutella on top of one of the trees and a little over one of the stars. Layer the second tree and star over the Nutella. Press the star piece on top of the tree. Cut slits on both sides going up the tree. Twist each strip of layered puff pastry - twist twice if you can.
- Brush with Egg Wash - In a small bowl whisk up the egg yolk with about a teaspoon or two of water. Brush the tree with the egg wash.
- Bake - Bake until golden brown. The cookies can be served warm or at room temperature.
Ingredients You'll Need:
- Puff Pastry - you can find this in the freezer section of most grocery stores. One box contains two sheets which is what this recipe uses. But you could easily halve or even double to make more or less cookies.
- Nutella - or other chocolate spread
- Egg - For the egg wash. This gives the tree its shiny, golden finish
- Powdered Sugar - This is optional, but I love to sift powdered sugar over the top to give it a snowy effect.
Great Holiday Party Recipe
Your family and friends will be WOWED by the presentation of this easy holiday dessert. Serve the Nutella puff pastry tree on a large platter and allow guest to twist off pieces to enjoy.
Variations:
Instead of Nutella, try one of these other filling options!
- Jam - Use your favorite jam or jelly for a fruity spin
- Pesto - For a savory puff pastry spin, spread a layer of pesto
- Nuts - To add some texture, you can sprinkle finely chopped hazelnuts or slivered almonds on the Nutella layer.
You can also slice the Nutella Puff Pastry into a different shape! Other popular options are slicing it into strips that you then twist up (like you did the branches). Or you can make little pop-tart like pockets (use a fork to crimp the edges so they stay together and don't pop open.
Recipe Tips
- Warm Nutella - If you're having a hard time spreading the Nutella, you can warm it for just a few seconds in the microwave.
- Thaw Puff Pastry - You will buy the puff pastry in the freezer section of your grocery store and store in your freezer until ready to use, but it needs to be thawed in order to roll out and use.
- Roll out Puff Pastry - You want to roll our the puff pastry sheets into two large rectangles. This helps keep the pastry from puffing up too much and rising too high.
- Twist the Branches Twice - Doing this helps prevent them from unraveling when baking and makes the 'twist' more pronounced. This is hard to do with the top super short branches, but make sure to do it for the lower branches.
Leftovers and Storage
Leftovers and Storage: The tree is best served soon after baking while it is still warm or room temperature. But leftovers can be stored at room temperature, in an airtight container, for up to 5 days.
Serving Ideas
The great thing about this recipe is it is presentation ready right out of the oven! If you want to take it up a notch, try dusting it with powdered sugar, or drizzling it with a little extra warm Nutella.
For pairings, you can set out bowls of fresh berries like raspberries and sliced strawberries.
