Making homemade Fajita Seasoning Mix from scratch is super easy and uses spices you already have in your pantry. You can use fajita seasoning with chicken, shrimp, steak, veggies, and even soup!

Store-bought fajita seasoning packets are heavy on the salt and sodium. So try making your own blend at home instead!

What is fajita seasoning made of?

You probably have all the spices you need in your pantry! Here's what you need:

    • Chili Powder
    • Ground Cumin
    • Paprika - Or Smoked Paprika
    • Garlic Powder
    • Onion Powder
    • Kosher Salt
    • Ground Black Pepper
    • Ground Cayenne Pepper - optional

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between taco seasoning and fajita seasoning?

Taco seasoning and fajita seasoning use similar ingredients, but taco seasoning has more oregano and chili powder.

How much fajita seasoning should be used?

A good rule of thumb is to use 1 tablespoon of seasoning per pound of meat. But you can use more or less to suit your taste.

How much fajita seasoning is in one packet?

One packet of store-bought seasoning has about 3 tablespoons.

    Storage

It can be easily stored in old spice jars, small mason jars, a small airtight container, or even a ziptop plastic bag if you're in a pinch! The spice mix can be stored for 3-5 months in a cool and dark place.

    Fajita Seasoning Mix Variations:

    • Salt - Most store-bought fajita spice mixes are much saltier than this homemade recipe. You can add more salt, if you'd like.
    • More Heat - This fajita seasoning is a mild-moderate spice level. If you prefer it to be spicier, you can add more cayenne pepper.

    Ways to Use Fajita Seasoning

A fajita spice blend is surprisingly versatile! Here are some of my favorite ways to use it:

    • Chicken or Shrimp Fajitas - Toss raw sliced chicken breasts or raw shrimp with the spice blend to coat. Then roast in the oven or even in the air fryer like these air fryer fajitas.
    • Soup or Chili - Try using in a Chicken Tortilla Soup or even a Chili in place of the other spices.
    • Spice rub: Try using as a spice rub for any kind of meat or seafood such as chicken, beef, pork carnitas, or shrimp. After rubbing the meat, I like to let sit for about 20 minutes before cooking.
    • Roasted veggies: Toss veggies with oil and the spice blend before roasting for super flavorful veggies.
    • Swapped in for Taco Seasoning - You can easily swap it for taco seasoning when making ground beef or ground turkey tacos.
    • Turn it into a marinade: Combine a few teaspoons of the seasoning blend with some olive oil and lime juice and use as a fajita marinade!
