Sweet potato wedges (or really most potatoes) are a versatile and crowd pleasing side dish! Some of my other favorite potato recipes worth trying are these air fryer crispy parmesan potatoes, crispy roasted baby potatoes, and smashed buffalo potatoes.

    ⭐Why I love It:

    • Fast Cooking - They cook in only 15 minutes!
    • Simple Spices - You probably have the spices in your pantry! I love pairing of cinnamon with paprika and a little cayenne for kick.
    • Versatile - They're great as a side with just about anything for anytime of day.
    sweet potato wedges with ketchup.

    🥘Ingredients Needed:

    • Sweet Potatoes- No need to peel them, just give a scrub. You can also air fry a whole sweet potato using this air fryer baked whole sweet potato recipe.
    • Olive Oil - You can swap in another cooking oil, such as avocado oil
    • Spices - Salt, Pepper, Smoked Paprika, Cayenne Pepper, Ground Cinnamon, Garlic Powder

See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

    📖Variations:

You can mix up the spices to your liking - the cook time will remain the same. Here are some common variations I make:

    • Simple Salt and Pepper - You can just use salt and pepper for simple wedges. After cooking, I like to sprinkle with a little extra flaky sea salt.
    • Spicy - For a kick, add extra cayenne pepper.
    • Sweet - You can omit the cayenne and paprika and use just cinnamon, even adding a little extra.

    🔪Step By Step Instructions:

Air frying sweet potato wedges is much faster than baking in the oven and far less messy (and healthier) than frying.

    whole sweet potatoes.

Photo 1 - Scrub and dry the potatoes then cut into even wedges. No need to peel the potatoes.

sweet potato wedges tossed in oil and spices.

Photo 2 - Add the sweet potatoes to a bowl and drizzle with the oil and sprinkle on the spices. Toss together so all of the wedges are evenly coated. I find it easiest to use my hands to evenly distribute the spices.

uncooked sweet potato wedges in air fryer.

Photo 3 - Add the seasoned wedges to the air fryer basket in an even layer. Keeping the potatoes in a layer without piling them up too much helps get them crispy.

Photo 4 - Air fry until they are fork tender. Serve immediately while still warm.

    💭Recipe Tips:

    • Cut into Uniform Wedges - The key to evenly cooked potatoes is cutting them into a similar size.
    • Don't Skimp on Oil - Make sure to evenly distribute the oil. This helps get the potatoes nice and crispy.
    • Don't Crowd the Basket - In my air fryer, I can fit the wedges from 1 large sweet potato or two smaller potatoes. If I'm making a bigger batch, it's best to cook in batches so the wedges aren't crowded.
    • Adjust Spices to Taste - Adjust the spices to fit your taste preferences.
    • Serve Immediately - The wedges are at their crispiest when they're still warm right after air frying.

    🍽Storage and Reheating:

    • Storage - Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
    • Reheating - Leftovers can be reheated in the air fryer at 350 degrees F for about 5 minutes until warmed.

    👩‍🍳Recipe FAQs:

Do you have to soak sweet potatoes before air frying?

You do not need to soak sweet potatoes before air frying. While soaking helps remove starch which can result in crispier potatoes, sweet potatoes have less starch than regular potatoes so it doesn't make a big difference.

What should sweet potato wedges be served with?

I love serving these as a side with dinner - such as burgers, chicken sandwiches (like these Caesar Grilled Chicken Sandwiches), or Instant Pot BBQ Ribs.

Why are my sweet potato fries soggy in the air fryer?

A common mistake that leads to sweet potato wedges not getting as crisp in the air fryer is if they are overcrowded in the basket. You want there to be room for the hot air to circulate. This may mean that you need to cook the potato wedges in batches.

Can you eat the skin on sweet potato wedges?

Yes you can eat sweet potato skin! I like the extra texture it adds and the skin has added nutrients (like fiber, potassium, and vitamins A and C). But if you don't like the skin's texture, then you can also peel the potatoes before slicing into wedges.

    • Method: Air Fryer
    • Cuisine: American
    • Diet: Vegan

    Ingredients

    • 1 large sweet potato, or 2 small-medium
    • 2 teaspoons olive oil
    • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
    • ⅛ teaspoon ground black pepper
    • ¼ teaspoon smoked paprika
    • ⅛ teaspoon ground cayenne pepper, adjust to taste
    • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder

    Instructions

    1. Prep – Scrub and dry the sweet potato then cut into uniform wedges. No need to peel the potatoes.
    2. Season – Add the wedges to a bowl and drizzle with the oil and sprinkle on the spices. Toss together so all of the wedges are evenly coated. I find it easiest to use your hands to evenly distribute the spices.
    3. Add to Air Fryer – Add the seasoned wedges to the air fryer basket in an even layer. If you’re making a big batch, you can air fry in two batches. Keeping the potatoes in a layer without piling them up too much helps get them crispy.
    4. Air Fry – Air fry the potatoes at 375 degrees F for 12-14 minutes. The potatoes are done when they are fork tender.
    5. Serve – Serve while still warm.

    Notes

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for up to 4 days. Reheat in the air fryer at 350 degrees F for about 3-5 minutes until warmed.
